As users of the web, you have probably seen sites with notices indicating that the site is "under construction". You may also have seen places on the web which state that ALL web documents are ALWAYS under construction and therefore leave off the construction notices. In the case of this document, neither is really appropriate. This web site consists of many individual documents. At any given time some will be substantially complete while others will be mere outlines. To give the reader some warning as to the status of the content of a page, the following conventions will be observed.
- Construction Status Indicators
- The main index will display a colored dot next to the link for each page indicating it's status. The color code is as follows:
The page is substantially complete.
The page has substantial information but is under construction.
The page is mostly incomplete, may only exist as an outline.
The page is proposed, does not exist yet.
The page is on a different server and is not part of this document set.
- Date of Last Update
- Each page will have a banner at the top of the page reflecting the last time the page was altered. This date will be repeated at the bottom of the page.
- Construction Status Banner
- Each page will have a banner indicating it's construction status at that time. When the page is felt to be substantially complete, the construction notice banner will disappear from that page. When finished (if ever) many of the pages will change only to reflect changes and/or updates.
When I started working on this, I didn't have any preconceived notions as to how it would turn out. Now it is assuming the proportions of a book! You, the reader, have the benefit of reading over my shoulder as I am writing it. This means that you may see some odd things such as paragraph headers with no content, links that go nowhere, etc. You will also see factual errors and spelling errors. I am also experimenting with HTML formatting, so some pages will look different than others. So if you see anything that looks a bit bizarre, just come back later. It'll probably change.1/95 - (I think this date is correct.) I start working on the site after getting miffed at the lack of a FAQ on the sci.geo.satellite-nav newsgroup. 5/95 - (I think this date is correct too) Site goes public on EINET/Galaxy. 11/95 - This month, I started working at a new job at Northern Telecom in one of the cellular engineering groups. This job is keeping me in the office until 2 am on an annoyingly regular basis. Between the job and moving into my new house, I've been unable to update the page on anything like a regular basis. Well, we're just about finished moving so I should be able to get back to something remotely resembling a schedule now.
1/1/97 - Today hopefully marks the start of an entirely new look for the "Intro to GPS Apps" web site. I've hardly been able to work on the site at all for the entire year of '96. This year I hope to consolidate the main site with the archive and add automation to some of the upkeep, especially the vendor and equipment lists. Also, I'm adding several mail accounts to allow readers to upload their own announcements, etc. Odds are pretty good I won't get to work on this much until February.
