Mine Laying & Detection
U.S. Naval Reserve helicopters have been equipped with the Magic Lantern mine detection system. Two of the systems were fitted to SH-2G Super Seasprite helicopters of the HSL-94 Helicopter Antisubmarine Warfare Squadron on December 7, 1996. The Magic Lantern system uses a blue-green laser to scan the sea to a depth greater than the keel of any american warship. Mines that are detected by the system are recorded with GPS provided coordinates. Once mines are identified, they can be avoided or desposed of at a later time.
