Transatlantic Balloon Racing

A transatlantic balloon race was held on September 16, 1992. Five balloons with crews from different countries participated. Two Garmin Model 100 GPS receivers were carried in each balloon. The GPS receivers were used as navigational aids and to verify world records. In addition, velocity and direction information from the GPS allowed the users to identify wind currents. In addition, position information supplied by the GPS allowed rescuers to pick up several downed crews.

Covering the America's Cup races

Television coverage of the America's Cup sailboat races are being enhanced through the use of GPS. Trimble GPS receivers and Motorola DGPS radio modems are used to track individual boats. The tracking information is used to create computer graphics on Silicon Graphics workstations.

Competition Glider Navigation

Crews of 91 sailplanes gathered in New Zealand on New Years Day, 1995 for the 24th World Gliding Championships. Flights were made between January 1 and 21. All of the sailplanes were required to carry secure, tamperproof GPS recorders made by Cambridge Aero Instruments, eliminating positioning uncertainty and photographic turnpoints. The Cambridge GPS recorder uses a Garmin GPS 10 engine. Cockpit readouts were supplied for the pilots. A temperature compensated piezoresistive altimeter was used to record altitude.

All of the sailplanes carried turnpoint cameras as a backup to the GPS and altimeter recorders. However, by the end of the event, none of the pilots were bothering to have the film processed. In one case, a sailplane disintegrated in turbulent air, forcing the pilot to use his parachute. Another glider pilot used GPS coordinates to direct rescuers to the downed pilot.
