GPS Receivers for Spacecraft

Spacecraft receivers
Spacecraft receivers are almost but not quite the same as groundbased receivers. Most groundbased receivers are programmed with altitude and speed limits because of US COCOM export restrictions. Spacecraft GPS receivers will naturally operate at high velocities and altitudes; therefore, these restrictions must be removed. Also, GPS receivers must compensate for the doppler shift imposed on the radio signal caused because the motion of the satellite. Spacecraft GPS receivers will experience greater doppler shifting than groundbased GPS receivers due to the additional motion of the receiver. The spacecraft receiver must therefore be designed to accomodate the greater doppler shift. Also, the receiver has to be hardened against the increased radiation environment.
