-----Original Message----- From: Lauren Dunn [mailto:lauren@wickett.org] Sent: Friday, June 13, 2003 3:09 PM To: Lauren Dunn Subject: Collin Classic Update - Friday the 13th The Saturday morning forecast is looking better and better. If the weather is good (especially if the temperature is below 70 in the morning), expect to see 2500+ cyclists take the course. Do not hesitate to e-mail me if you have any un-answered questions. I'll be at Jason's Deli at 6:00 pm. There will probably also be people there who know what they're talking about. Additional instructions have been included in this (probably the last) update to the assignment sheet/communications plan. If you have not done so already, grab the excellent maps John has prepared at http://www.redsword.com/jbeadles/radio/2003_collin_classic/ . If you have not signed a waiver, you must check in at net control by 7:00 on Saturday morning. Try not to arrive at McKinney North High School between 7:00 and the event start so that you aren't contributing to the expected traffic congestion. Event communications- Tactical calls will be used throughout the event. Example: "Net Control, this is Rest Stop 1." Net Control will acknowledge your call. Example: "Rest Stop 1, go ahead." State your traffic concisely. Example: "Rest Stop 1 is open for business." Net Control will acknowledge your traffic. Example: "Received. Rest Stop 1 is ready for cyclists. K5PAV." End all transmissions with your call sign. Example: "Thank you, Net Control. NC5U clear" Net Control will ID periodically indicating similar to: "This is K5PAV, net control for the 2003 Collin Classic. This is a directed net. Any station with emergency traffic may interrupt at any time using the pro-sign 'break'." If you personally have emergency traffic, indicate so when calling net control. Example: "Net Control, this is Rest Stop 2. Priority Traffic." Net Control will acknowledge. Example: "Rest Stop 2, you have the frequency. All other stations, please stand by." State your traffic. Always tell net control that 911 has been called. If 911 hasn't been called, you should be calling 911, not net control. Example: "This is Rest Stop 2. Cyclist #761 injured from fall. 911 has been called. EMS is en route." Once Net Control has obtained all necessary information, the net will resume. Example: "This is K5PAV, net control for the 2003 Collin Classic. All stations may proceed with traffic." Arrival times for rest stop workers If you're working a rest area, consider the setup times below to be "arrive no later than" times. Keep in mind that if you'll be in transit to a rest area after the ride starts at 8:00, you'll need to plan a route that does not force you to pass cyclists. Rest Area Setup First Riders 1 7:00 8:30 2 7:00 9:00 3 8:00 9:30 4 8:00 10:00 5 8:30 6 8:00 9:30 7 8:30 10:00 8 7:00 9:00 9 7:00 8:30-9:00 Arrival times for all others Arrive at net control (McKinney North High School) prior to 7:00 am. There will be coffee and bagels - maybe even donuts. OLE_LINK4OLE_LINK3OLE_LINK1OLE_LINK2Key things to remember: * We're here to support the cyclists and other volunteers. If someone asks you a question that you can't answer, walk with them to the rest stop coordinator. If you're at a rest stop, the first thing to do upon arrival will be to introduce yourself to your rest stop coordinator and nurse. If the nurse at your rest area does not have a cell phone (or if it's not working), make sure they know where you are at all times. * Smile. Wave. Wear your sunscreen (don't just put it in the trunk). Drink lots of water. * Don't pass the cyclists when driving on the route. If there's an emergency, EMS should be responding, not you. * If you need to depart the route (other commitment, exhausted, your job is complete), leave the route in such a way that you won't encounter cycle traffic. Net control can assist you in locating a clear road. * Emergencies are to be called over the air as "situations." Call net control noting "priority traffic." All other stations not having their own priority traffic will remain silent until instructed by net control. Before calling net control to report the emergency, make sure that someone else has called/is calling 911. * Do not under any circumstances use rider names on the air. Riders will be identified by the rider number on the back of their jersey. * Net control will advise you if action needs to be taken during the event due to the onset of weather. If a weather emergency arises or seems imminent at your location, notify net control. * You must obey all traffic (and other) laws at all times during this event. Do not make any attempt to direct traffic unless directly instructed to do so by law enforcement personnel. This means that if you are working at the rest stop in Gunter where local law enforcement has told the rest stop coordinator that workers may direct traffic at their discretion, you may not assist unless a law enforcement officer directly instructs you to do so. There should be plenty of paint on the asphalt and corner workers to alert you to turns. If you're not comfortable leading, don't. Let some cyclists run in front of you. All - Remain a safe distance in front of cyclists and watch your mirrors. Remember that traffic laws are your responsibility. Cyclists may choose not to stop at stop signs and you need to be out of their way. Traffic Monitors Community & 380 (Tactical call: Traffic east) Rest Stop #11 Wilmeth & 75 (Tactical call: Traffic south) Rest Stop #10 Monitor the flow of traffic as vehicles enter the site beginning at 6:45 am. All published maps distributed to cyclists direct them in on Wilmeth. However, we need to watch traffic and make sure that there is no backup on Community since the riders will be starting on Community.
